People have traveled from one region to another for thousands of years. In that time, the methods of traveling have changed. Nowadays, people prefer traveling by air to get from one place to another in minimum time with less physical stress. But planes used in those commutes consume a large amount of fossil fuel and produce tons of greenhouse gases. That is why some people believe that international travel should be controlled by the government. I personally believe that such travel is important for us because it has economical and recreational benefits.
Thousands of flights are operated every day, taking people from one country to another. Gases such as CO2, CH4, and water vapor produced by the engines of those planes are left directly in the sensitive region of the atmosphere. Such gases are responsible for greenhouse effects, resulting in the rise of annual temperature. By controlling the amount of international flights, the amount of these gases can easily be reduced.
However, these gases are not only produced by commercial jets. Every kind of engine that uses mineral oil produces such gases. Even if in small quantities, the cumulative amount is surely much greater than that produced by vehicles used in air commute. And besides, it has a huge impact on economic growth. Business and trade around the globe depend on these international flights. Time is valuable for business tycoons; without these flights, it would not be possible for them to go to a country, have a meeting, and leave on the same day. Many people use these flights for recreational tours. It is also important for their mental well-being.
So, in conclusion, I believe that the negative environmental impacts of international flights outweigh the benefits. As long as we have not got any greener alternative, limiting the current air travel rate will only hamper economic growth and ruin people’s vacations and recreation. So, scientists and governments should focus on finding an environmental alternative rather than restricting air travel.
