There is a belief that traditions are to be ignored by people nowadays. An opposite view is also present which requires preserverence of the traditional way of life. In my essay I will argue that advantages of the maintaince of the country’s culture overweight the disadvantages.
The most obvious problem about keeping traditions is that they could be outdated. Needless to say, the world has changed dramatically over the years. Therefore, rituals which have stayed in the culture for a long time could be impractical today. A man taking off his hat before entering a building is an example of a tradition turning meaningless in present days. It calls back to the times when Bogatiri, the slavic warriors, existed. They wore enourmous steel helmets which did not allow our heroes to pass through the door without crouching. That is why the “hat” was required to be taken off first translating into the ritual we have today. However, many of the modern hats are not even remotely taking as much space as the old ones. Losing the purpose, the tradition also loses the appeal to the younger generation.
Following culture’s teachings has its benefits, the main one being ethnic unity. Every human is vastly different from one another. However, traditions is something a large group of people has in common. Referencing russian culture once again, let us take a look at the Maslenitza celebration. The historic purpose for this event is burning an idol for the Gods, ensuring the end of the winter’s cold. Ignoring the change in the religious and scientific views of the world, the holiday brings songs, dances and an abundance of the blini dish. People of various backgrounds join each other to forge strong bonds and to just have a good time.
To summarise, it is my firm belief that unity is more than enough a reason for the traditions’ importance. Keeping them is sure to be beneficial to our society.
