While freedom of speech is a fundamental right, some argue that governments should monitor and censor social media to prevent the spread of misinformation. This essay agrees limited government regulation is necessary to protect safety and social stability.
Unchecked misinformation on social media can cause real-world harm. False health advice, conspiracy theories, political propaganda can spread quickly/rapidly, especially when platforms fail to censor/verify the content. In many cases, users believe misleading posts because they come from familiar sources or emotional narratives. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, false claims about vaccines led to widespread fear, vaccine refusal, and unnecessary deaths.
However, censorship must be carefully controlled to avoid misuse and overreach. While some harmful content should be removed, not all controversial opinions are dangerous, and over-censorship may silence legitimate debate. Moreover, if governments are given total control, censorship can be used to suppress criticism or manipulate public opinion. For instance, in several authoritarian countries, social media is heavily restricted to prevent people from questioning the government.
