Work from home” or “remote work” has opened a new domain of corporate life. It has also sparked new debates about its impact on modern office culture.
Remote work has improved employees’ quality of life by giving them the work-life balance they craved for. They can work on their own schedules and complete their tasks at their own pace within given time frame, which in turn enhances their overall productivity. For example, if I need to submit a task by 10:00 am next morning, I can work from home, complete my task, and use the remaining time with my family without wasting it in commuting from office.
On the contrary, remote work has also reduced human interaction in between office colleagues. Virtual meetings have reduced face-to-face social bonds and interactions between colleagues and have often reduced the trust and loyalty in workspace. For Example, previously we used to celebrate each other birthdays or any other special occasions where the whole office or team would gather to enjoy the occasions. Nowadays, the whole celebration has moved to social media with a single message of comment post with no human touch in it.
From my point of view, I think, we need a hybrid model of remote work as well physical workspace to improve the mindset of the employees. Work from home with give them more flexibility and freedom to meet their own personal needs and a physical workspace will help them collaborate their ideas with their office colleagues and with give them a structured environment to execute their tasks in a growing setup.
