In today’s fast-paced and technologically driven society, smartphones have become an indispensable part of human existence. Alongside essential necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter, smartphones have become an integral part of daily life, providing access to a wealth of information and connectivity through the internet. Many children are increasingly engrossed in their smartphones, seeking knowledge and staying updated. However, I firmly believe this trend represents a negative development.
While the invention of smartphones has undoubtedly been a boon for mankind, it has also brought about negative consequences, particularly for children who spend prolonged periods engaged with their devices. Excessive use of smartphones, including browsing the internet and playing games, can have detrimental effects on children’s eyesight. Unfortunately, many parents are not fully aware of these adverse effects and allow their children unrestricted access to smartphones, oblivious to the potential repercussions their children may face in the future.
Research has indicated that prolonged use of smartphones can lead to eyesight damage, with some individuals at risk of complete vision loss. Shockingly, a survey in the USA revealed that approximately one-fourth of the youth population is addicted to smartphones, with around 68% of them requiring eyeglasses, and some even as young as 7 to 10 years of age. Furthermore, there have been distressing real-life incidents that highlight the dangers associated with excessive smartphone usage. For instance, a 9-year-old boy in India reportedly lost his vision after binge-watching movies and web series every night in the dark, leading to ineffective sleep patterns. Additionally, a tragic incident in Kerala captured public attention when a young girl lost her life due to a fire caused by her mobile phone’s battery exploding. Investigations linked the explosion to extensive use of the device. These distressing events exemplify the serious consequences of excessive smartphone usage among young individuals.
While smartphones undoubtedly offer numerous benefits, it is crucial to recognize that their usage must be carefully managed. The excessive reliance on electronic devices has transformed physically active children into sedentary individuals, devoid of physical activity and face-to-face interactions. As such, it is imperative for parents and society as a whole to be cognizant of the potential negative impacts of unfettered smartphone usage among children.
