Band 9: Some children spend hours every day on their smartphones. Why is this the case? Do you think this is a positive or a negative development? April 11, 2023 / Band 9, Cambridge IELTS 17 Academic, IELTS Writing Task 2

In recent years, smartphones have become an inseparable part of daily life, and many children now spend several hours each day using them. While this trend can be explained by both entertainment and educational needs, I believe it represents a largely negative development for children’s overall growth.

There are several reasons why children devote so much time to their phones. Firstly, smartphones provide endless entertainment options, such as online games, social media platforms, and video-sharing apps, which are highly addictive. These activities often replace traditional forms of play and recreation. Secondly, smartphones are increasingly used for educational purposes. Many schools integrate digital tools into the learning process, and children rely on phones for research, homework, and online classes. Lastly, peer influence plays a major role, as children may feel pressured to stay connected with friends through messaging apps and social networks.

Despite these factors, the excessive use of smartphones tends to have negative consequences. From a health perspective, prolonged screen time contributes to eye strain, sleep disturbances, and a lack of physical activity, which may increase the risk of obesity. Socially, children who rely too heavily on virtual communication may struggle to develop essential interpersonal skills, leading to isolation. Academically, smartphones can become a major distraction, reducing attention spans and negatively affecting academic performance.

Admittedly, smartphones offer benefits, such as access to information and improved digital literacy, which are valuable in today’s technology-driven world. However, when children spend excessive time on devices without parental supervision, the drawbacks clearly outweigh the advantages.

In conclusion, children’s increasing smartphone use is driven by entertainment, education, and social factors, yet it is primarily a negative development. To ensure healthy growth, parents and educators should encourage moderation and promote alternative activities that balance technology with real-life interactions.
