Band 6+: Some cities have few control over design and construction on housing and office buildings. People think that they are free to choose the design they like. Do you think the advantages outweigh disadvantages?

It is indeed true that design and construction of accommodations and buildings used as offices are controlled to a small extent by the cities which is not favored by the inhabitants. In my perspective, the demerits of styling and developing buildings with the intervention of city officials exceeds its merits.

Firstly, if the individuals do not get to have a lot of say in the designing of their houses, it may lead to their feelings being heart. To explain, a person saves the money to invest in his house after cutting a lot of expenses for many years just to build it according to his needs as well as wants. However, even the mere interference of the officials who control the building to be constructed in the city can ruin their long awaited plans of creating their dream house. Sometimes, even if they end up having a settlement with the city, the house that has been built is not up to their standards or match their aesthetics. From a business point of view, architecture of a company’s building depicts a lot about its visions and goals. However, if they have to accord with the terms of city planners, it may result in the image of a company being not properly portrayed to its consumers as well as in the market.

Nevertheless, the merits of this cannot be ignored. The control on the designs and buildings of these infrastructure may result in the proper maintenance of facilities in the urban areas. To further elaborate, the layout of the cities is planned to cope up with the needs of all the people living in different buildings in the city. If people began designing their houses as they wish to, the cityscape would be ruined as some buildings would be small whereas others will be huge which may result in having uneven amount of sunlight in summers and very cold temperature in the winters in these buildings. It may also hinder the beauty of the city. As sometimes a city is planned according to a particular theme, if the inhabitants decide not to cooperate with the layout planners of the city, the whole plan of maintaining a specific outlook of that specific urban setting can be destroyed.

To sum up, although, this practice has many negative as well as positive sides to it, if both the parties, namely, the city layout planners and the locals join their hands, there is no goal that cannot be accomplished.
