In modern society the discussion on the needs, requirements and roles of old age people are being of increasing concern. This increasing interest in the topic in recent times is due to the increasing population of people above retirement age. Their kids being busy with their own lives in this modern society, the retired parents tend to live alone or be living in an old age home. This scenario has led to to the question whether the people at their old age should live with their children and grand children or be left to live alone.
The debate has always lead to two polar opinions, each section having their own reasons. Some say that parents at old age, should live with their children. Living with children ensures that the parents are safe, both financially and from dangers such as break-ins and robbery. Also, its the responsibility of the children to take care of the health of their parents, if the children keep their parents with them, in case of medical emergencies, a swift action can be taken. Moreover people who support the grandparents living with their children and grand children emphasise that the grandkids develop moral values, and receive extra care from their grand parents which will be beneficial for the personal development of the small kids.
On the other hand , these opinions are countered by some other who view people at old age living independently more suitable. They argue that the retired parents should not be a financial burden to their children who now have their own families to take care of. Moreover, when the retired live alone, they will feel a sense of freedom rather than depending on their kids for everything. Some also say that the old age homes are the most suitable options for the people past their retirement age as they get to live with people of their age, share common hobbies, and thus live a more interesting and happy life.
While the arguments against grandparents staying with their children and children hold some importance , the positives of them staying together outweighs the counter arguments. We humans have always had the traditions of living together and taking care of each others from ancient ages. The modern lifestyle should not be a hinderance in keeping one’s parents with them. The life experiences and values that the grandchildren can receive from the older ones are of great importance.
