In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in crime rate across various countries. While some argue the only way to tackle this issue is to put more police in the streets, I strongly disagee with this perspective.
On the one hand, having an excessive number of police officers on the streets may have some disadvantages. Firstly, it will give an image to citizens that they are living in a police state. In addition, it will also scare away tourists and foreign investments. Secondly, it will add more costs on public services, because the department of police will have to hire and train more staffs to make it happen. Finally, police clerks could be corrupted, with the increased numbers in policemen, they might start to blackmail local stores to pay protection rackets.
On the other hand, there are several alternatives we can use to lower the rate of crime. Governments can install more surveillance cameras in public and areas which contain high traffic. This devices can provide continuous monitoring that deter potential offenders, which make it difficult for them to break the law undetected. Moreover, societies should solve this problem by tackling its root causes, which are stagnant economy, high unemployment rate, and scarce social welfare. Last but not least, governments could promote legal awareness to citizens, educating them which activities are against the law.
In conclusion, it is obvious that the rate of crime in a number of countries have been rising. However, in my opinion, it will be wrong to have more police on the street.
