Band 7+: Some countries spend a lot of money preparing competitors to take part in major competitions such as Olympic Games or football World Cup. Some people say that it would be better to spend this money encouraging children to take up sports from a young age. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In several nations, significant financial resources are contributed to preparing elite athletes for major international competition such as the Olympic and the FIFA World Cup. While this investment can elevate a country’s global image, I firmly believe that repurposing these funds toward encouraging children to participate in sports from an early age would bring broader and more long-term benefits.

On the one hand, allocating funds to professional athletes offers undeniable advantages. Firstly, achieving victory on prestigious global stages enhances a nation’s international reputation and fosters social cohesion. When national teams succeed, it creates a powerful sense of unity and collective pride. For instance, the overwhelming national celebration was demonstrated by the victory of Spain in their World Cup Campaign 2026. Secondly, high-performing athletes play a crucial part in inspiring powerfully the younger generation to take part in some physical activities. However, inspiration is insufficient if children lack access to local sports infrastructure such as grassroots sports facilities and stadiums

On the other hand, directing funds toward student sports produces long-term benefits for the whole society. First, participating in team sports teaches essential life skills including discipline, team work, and resilience under pressure. These transferable skills directly help young people succeed in their future education and career. Second, while funding top athletes benefits only a small group of individuals, young academies embrace an entire generation and naturally help identify new athletic talents in sports. Finally, encouraging children to play sports frequently prevents many health issues such as obesity and spinal problems, while building lifelong exercise habits. This healthier lifestyle ultimately lowers the burden on public healthcare systems and enhances overall quality of life.

In conclusion, although investing in elite sports brings immediate international recognition and pride, funding in childhood sports is a far more effective strategy. Supporting young learners not only improves public health and personal improvement but also builds a strong foundation for future athletic achievement.
