In this day and age, many individuals claim that social skills such as communication and critical thinking are more significant than the academic counterparts. From my perspective, I partially disagree with this viewpoint before presenting specific reasons in this essay.
On the one hand, having a wide range of social abilities contribute to the total work productivity. Nowadays, many companies and employers prioritize a cooperative and sustainable workplace environment. Fortunately, employees with critical thinking and good communication, by offering long term directions and innovative ideas, can create a promoted environment, which not only enriches other staffs’ knowledge, but also contributes to the comprehensive development of the entire company. For this reason, job applicants’ social skills are one of the significant criteria of many employers.
On the other hand, there are downsides when we ignore academic values. While the experience and personality one has may be difficult for assessing recruiters, then degrees and certificates are reliable indicators, representing to their talent. For instance, in sectors such as IT where a thorough understanding in technology and algorithm is necessary, applicants with those qualifications are often more attractive to employers, compared to the lacking counterparts who only possess good life experience or social skills.
In conclusion, social abilities can benefit applicants in many real-life circumstances, offering them confidence and promoting development of the entire workplace. However, people should not ignore values of academic qualification as it also provides applicants with a higher job opportunity and other merits. For these reasons, the combination of those aspects is a more optimal approach.
