Nowadays, many employers expect their staff to remain available at all times, including during holidays. I strongly believe that it has more disadvantages, as it prevents employees from properly resting and often leads to additional unpaid work.
One significant disadvantage is that employees won’t be able to disconnect and rest properly. This is mainly because it increases stress and anxiety, causes a lack of work-life balance, and invades personal life. For example, if employees are on vacation, they would feel mentally on duty, which leads to stress and burnout. This constant expectation can make them anxious and unable to relax. Additionally, employers contacting them feels like an invasion of privacy and exploitation.
Another major drawback is that it will cause extra and unpaid work. Employees are paid for a specific number of hours, and bothering them with extra tasks without payment and their approval is clearly a disadvantage for employees.
For instance, a worker who is officially on vacation might be asked to attend online meetings or complete extra work, despite not being compensated for this extra time and labour.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that requiring employees to remain constantly available is disadvantageous, as it negatively affects workers rest periods and often requires them to complete unpaid work.
