In the contemporary era, technological advancements have become an integral part of human existence, sparking a debate on whether they make people less socially active or not. From my perspective, I cannot firmly agree with any of the statements.
Undoubtedly, cutting-edge technologies have brought about some negative changes. First and foremost, an importantly serious lack of face-to-face communication is triggered by electronic devices, which can eventually lead to a total isolation. For instance, a person who has no need in arranging real-life meetings will probably face the consequences of the persistent replacement of the conversations in person by chatting on social media via a smartphone. These could include unstable mental condition, deficiency of communication experience, and as a result, struggle to perceive the emotions of another person correctly. Furthermore, a vast variety of computer-related entertainment has enabled the virtual world to engross people, causing them to waste hours in front of the screens of their gadgets. Consequently, addiction progresses and can end up as a severe mental illness and harm physical health by causing eye strain, neck pain, and posture problems.
In contrast, an opposed point of view exists. It is admitted that modern highly sophisticated technologies have provided different social classes with the opportunity to use diverse applications and sites for communication. People who previously sustained lack of communication due to long distances and inability to stay in contact with the dearest ones can now enjoy the gradually growing social bond while sending voice messages and making video calls. Additionally, dating websites and thematic social networks can become a significant enhancement of the withdrawn people’s social lives. Introverts still crave social interaction, although they might find real-life communication extremely challenging and distressing. In this case, technology allows to meet new people, who are likely to share common interests with a seeking person, without any anxiety.
In conclusion, rapidly developing technological inventions positively contribute to everyday communication. They enable large numbers of people to keep in touch with each other despite the circumstances and help ones with reserved personalities to find friends or good acquaintances online. Nevertheless, today’s technologies can cause mental and physical disorders, as well as lead to social isolation and addiction. Therefore, I believe that a balanced approach to this question is preferable because none of the arguments should be overlooked.
