Moving into the 21st century, sports events have been increasing rapidly. Many people believe that hosting international sporting events is beneficial for a country, while others argue that it may create a several problems rather than benefits. This essay will examine both sides and share my opinion in the following paragraphs with appropriate examples and reasons.
On the positive side, hosting a major sports event can improve a country’s global image. Millions of people watch these events live on television, which helps promote tourism and culture. Another advantage is that many athletes travel to the host country, which allows them to explore local traditions and learn about the country’s religion. As a result, it can offer to makes strong relation with other countries, which can also help globally. For instance, India hosting the T20 World Cup, with twenty participating teams, allows foreign visitors to explore India’s historical places and enhance their cultural knowledge.
On the negative side, hosting international sports events often create several problems. Firstly, the cost is extremely high and many countries such as Australia, South Africa, and the UK spend billions of dollars on stadium and facilities that are rarely used later. This money could be better spent on better infrastructure such as healthcare, education, and transport, which become useful for the local public in the future. Secondly, after spending a huge amount of money on sports events, governments may increase taxes due to budget shortages, which directly affects the standard of living of local people.
To conclude, although spending a huge amount of money increases taxes and people feel not worth it, help to clear country’s image at the world stage and increase knowledge of different cultures for internationals. Therefore, I believe that hosting multinational sports tournaments bring greater benefits.
