It is widely argued that worldwide sporting activities pose immense threat to the host country. While others concur with this statement because it may lead to cultural erosion, I completely disagree and assert that its benefits that include increase in foreign exchange and employment opportunities are far more significant.
First and foremost, influx of international participants to the host state is one of the primary drivers for the rise in foreign currency collection. This is because foreign visitors will pay for their transport, accommodation and food. As a result, the host nation will have substantial ability to import goods and services, pay for their external debts and expand their local economy. For example, South Africa hosted highly-competitive world cup football championship in 2010 and as a consequence, it recorded the highest turn-over in their revenue base. Therefore, it is clear that states gain financially through world-class sporting events.
Furthermore, another primary advantage of being at the center of international sporting competitions is that it generates mass job opportunities. This begins with the planning stage to the action days. A number of local people will secure lucrative employment as field marshals, track officials and cloak room cleaners among other works. For example, Kenya contracted huge number of its citizens to do various jobs when it hosted world international athletics championship. Thus, it is evident that sporting activities revitalizes job markets of the hosting country.
To conclude, although with increase of international visitors to the host country may erode native heritage, it is undeniably evident that the merits are substantial and far-reaching.
