It is undeniable that the contribution of scientific research to the world is remarkable. However, it is argued that doing scientific research is a waste of time and investment. This essay will shed light on the merits and demerits of this issue and provide a final assessment.
On the one hand, people believe that investing money and time for researching is worthwhile. Firstly, scientific research is the proactive preparation for a future. Scientists are able to identify the potential risks in the future before they manifest. For instance, environmental and climate research allows us to forecast the upcoming disasters, develop strategies to deal with future environmental damage, etc. Moreover, doing scientific research can promote new inventions. For example, in the past people had to struggle with the infection, luckily the development of penicillin by Alexander Flaming was invented. Therefore, this antibiotic has saved various people since its introduction.
On the other hand, scientific research is a waste of time and money. In spite of hard work from researchers, scientific research can still give unexpected results. Research takes at least a year, if not a decade to complete the whole process which comprises : researching, experimenting, calculating the potential risks, producing practical applications. Unfortunately, some studies fail to meet the strict demands of scientists during the research stages. Next, scientific research requires a substantial amount of money from the national budget for advanced equipments, skilled personnel. Instead of investing a lot of money for researching, that amount of money should be spent on more urgent issue such as: poverty, education, health fields, etc.
In conclusion, scientific research brings both benefits and drawbacks. It offers proactive preparation for the future and also develops new inventions. However, doing scientific research consumes a lot of time and investment. I strongly believe that the government should carefully consider the funding and timing for this development to be benefited from research without affecting other areas.
