Band 8+: Some people believe that advertising encourages us to buy things we do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Advertising has become an integral part of modern life, influencing the choices people make every day. While some believe that its primary purpose is to inform consumers about new products and services, others argue that it is mainly designed to persuade people to purchase things they do not need. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe the main purpose of advertising is to inform consumers.

On the one hand, advertising plays a vital role in introducing consumers to new products and services. Businesses rely on advertisements to raise awareness of what they offer and to explain the features, benefits, and prices of their products. This enables consumers to compare different options and make informed purchasing decisions. For example, when a company launches a new smartphone or healthcare product, advertising helps potential customers understand how it differs from competing alternatives and whether it meets their needs.

On the other hand, many advertisements are carefully designed to persuade people to buy products they may not actually need. Companies often use celebrities, emotional storytelling, attractive visuals, and limited-time offers to create a sense of desire or urgency. As a result, consumers may make impulsive purchases simply because they feel they might miss out on a good deal. This behaviour can encourage unnecessary spending and contribute to a culture of excessive consumption.

In my opinion, although advertising certainly aims to increase sales, its primary function is to inform consumers. Businesses cannot persuade people to purchase a product unless they first make them aware of its existence. Furthermore, many advertisements provide valuable information about new technologies, services, and innovations that can improve people’s daily lives. Persuasion is therefore an important element of advertising, but it is secondary to informing the public.

In conclusion, while advertising can influence consumers to buy products they do not necessarily need, I believe its main purpose is to inform people about goods and services. By providing useful information, advertisements enable consumers to make better purchasing decisions while also helping businesses reach their target audience.
