Some individuals believe that educating kids at home is better for their development, whereas others think that academic schools and learning institutions benefit them most. In this essay I will discuss both views in depth, and give my own opinion on this matter.
Homeschooling enables parental control, and provides a controlled curriculum that the children follow. This eases the process of teaching beneficial information based on the parent’s views, as kids are subjected to study habits that parents are familiar with, leading to a more controlled development. Moreover, parents educating their kids lets them grasp the knowledge faster and more efficiently, as they know how to discipline them. A study conducted by the university of michigan suggests that many children of homeschooling have developed many critical thinking skills, and fast paced learning habits.
However, Homeschooling doesn’t provide the environment that academic institutions offer, as kids do not interact with other students around them. This phenomenon creates social awkwardness, and makes children lack the communication skills needed to use in their career. Furthermore, most children learning at home do not have the opportunity to experience the standard academic path, leading to stress due to overwork and burnout, which stymies progression.The Michigan study elaborates on homeschooling by stating that most of the children subjected do not have as many friends as academic institutions’ students.
In conclusion, both ways, if done right, provide the academics required in the career path. However, the merits of academic institutions outweigh that of homeschooling, as social skills and interacting with others is a crucial skill that the latter lacks. So I think that parents should enroll their children in places where they communicate with others, and develop both social and academic skills.
