Extending incarceration long is proposed by some people to reduce the criminal rate, while others support various solutions. In my opinion, alternative approaches are recommended
Longer imprisonment time enhances the deterrence of the law and deters criminals from re-offending. With more time they serve the sentence, the cost of breaking laws increases as well, leading to fewer impulsive crimes because people would consider the consequences. Additionally, more time spending in jail not only helps offenders to correct their values and behaviors with comprehensive courses incorporated but also the rigorous observation and professional evaluation made by officers about the release, offering more rehabilitation for criminals, and preventing them from committing crimes again.
However, the quotas and reserves are limited in prison. A time extension of imprisonment would only occupy space where other criminals have no place to settle and undermine the validity and authority of laws as insufficient prisons and officers, leading to less constraint, and making rehabilitation unrealistic. In contrast, other methods like community services can replace some educational courses in prison and relieve the stress of prison management, allowing criminals to adopt a social environment, enhance a bond with society, and instill a sense of responsibility. In the Western world, the US government especially, instead of sending minor lawbreakers to prison, encourages minor lawbreakers to serve publicity. Society is a better campaign to educate some offenders with easier access to the outside world.
In conclusion, while the extension of incarceration time helps social steady, it cannot tackle the issue entirely, considering prisons’ limitations and labor shortage. More flexible options are feasible and scientific according to different extents of crime as this can share the pressure burdened by jail.
