Learning a language is a significant part of life, enabling people to communicate with representatives of various cultures. Learning other cultures allows us to understand other perspectives and therefore foster career opportunities. However some citizens think it’s not important and school programs should not have language courses due to the loss of mother tongue.
On the one hand, learning another language will open many career and education opportunities, such as working in international companies or studying abroad. Some professional are able to get a higher salary and expand their qualifications.For instance, IT professionals move to Singapore to get a better working conditions and the main requirement is knowledge of English, it follows that studying another language could help to improve a quality of life.
On the other hand, paying too much attention to learning foreign languages can reduce importance of the mother tongue. Pupils will prefer to learn English or Chinese, but not their native language, due to the fact that their native language is used only in their homeland. By way of example, Kazakhstan, where foreign language became more common than their mother tongue, which greatly influenced their culture in general and it increased the percentage of immigration.
In conclusion, I believe that learning foreign languages at school is important, but not more important than the mother tongue. School curricula should include in-depth study of the mother tongue and devote to learning another language only twice a week.
