History plays a key role in individuals’ lives. This is a hotly-debated topic whether children supposed to learn history of their own country or of other nations. From my perspective, this seems to be more advantageous teaching and possessing children historical background of their country rather than other countries’ history, since learning own country’s history is a foundational knowledge and may foster a sense of identity at young age. However, I also believe that teaching other countries’ literature and history along with children’s own history broadens children’s horizons and creates respectful engagement with other histories.
To begin with, one of the most beneficial aspects of learning one’s own history to children is that it fosters a sense of identity and patriotism, which is an essential part of shaping children’s personality. From my experience, I have been taught about my own country’s history by my teachers and parents since my childhood, and now, I am the person who respects and admires my country’s cultural heritage and history. What I am trying to say is that there are no drawbacks of learning one’s own history, rather by learning one’s own history children can develop their sense of connection with their country. Furthermore, it can be overwhelming and hard to study complex concepts of other countries’ history, since it requires memorizing profound definitions and sequence of events. Therefore, I consider that teaching the children their own historical background is crucial in shaping the child’s personality and beliefs.
On the other hand, educating children about other countries’ history may expand their worldview and build a well-rounded perspective. But there is a point I want to mention is that they are supposed to study other countries’ history along with their own. It can be explained by the fact that , as I mentioned earlier, it will be difficult to study other’s history or cultural heritage without foundation or basic knowledge. Consequently, children taught about their own history and literature can later learn other’s history without pressure and difficulties. Therefore, it will be beneficial if children study both world and own history.
Taking all the arguments into account, I would say that without foundational knowledge about children’s country, it will be impossible to teach them others history, as they lack fundamental knowledge and basic understanding about history and its concepts. However, on balance, I feel that if they study both own and other’s cultural heritage and history, they will broaden their horizons and expand their worldview.
