Band 7+: Some people believe that it is wrong to keep animals in zoos, while others believe that zoos are both entertaining and ecologically important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

A divergence of viewpoints on the subject of animal confinement is evident in modern society. There are proponents and opponents of the idea of confining the freedom of animals; some argue in favor of lodging them in zoos or wildlife sanctuaries. From an economic, personal, and environmental standpoint, this essay will examine these divergent viewpoints.

Animals are protected from predators, severe weather conditions, and food scarcity, according to proponents of zoo animal husbandry. On the contrary, advocates for animal liberation contend that permitting animals to roam freely is more morally sound, given that confinement eradicates their access to natural surroundings and impedes their instinctive activities, including hunting and social engagement. Therefore, it is considered inhumane to confine animals to confined spaces. Assuring the preservation of animals’ natural habitats is considered a more appropriate allocation of resources, as it allows for their authentic existence.

Certain animal species face an imminent threat of extinction, which makes their conservation in zoos an absolute necessity. Zoological parks generate significant revenue from activities like wildlife tourism, despite the substantial costs associated with animal care. An example of an attraction that stimulates the local economy is the inclusion of Indian lions in circuses throughout India, which draw a multitude of tourists. However, critics contend that animal conservation efforts ought to be delayed in favor of investments in national infrastructure. They argue that providing substantial financial resources for the protection of particular animal species is less important than constructing critical infrastructure such as electricity plants. Furthermore, some argue that the moral justifiability of exploiting animals for entertainment or scientific experiments outweighs the necessity that some consider the captivity of animals to be for educational and research purposes.

In summary, although zoo housing offers numerous advantages, the ethical ramifications of bringing animals into confinement away from their natural environments must be thoroughly examined. Similar to Homo sapiens, animals are endowed with feelings and should be permitted to exist independently, free from unnecessary intervention. Therefore, it is imperative to maintain a delicate equilibrium between safeguarding animal welfare and promoting conservation initiatives.
