Some people believe that looking after elderly people should be the responsibility of their families rather than the government. This essay will discuss both views and explain why I believe that families should have the main responsibility, with government support when necessary.
On the one hand, families are often in a better position to care for older relatives. Firstly, family members have a close emotional relationship with elderly people, so they can understand their needs and provide comfort. Older people may also feel happier and less lonely when they live with their children or other relatives. Secondly, families can provide personal care that may not be available in care homes. For example, they can prepare meals, help with daily activities, and take older relatives to medical appointments.
On the other hand, the government also has an important role in supporting elderly people. Some families may have limited income or may be unable to provide full-time care because they work long hours. In such cases, government-funded hospitals, care centers, and financial assistance can reduce the burden on families. Moreover, older people who have no close relatives need support to live safely and comfortably.
In my opinion, families should take primary responsibility for caring for elderly people because they can provide personal attention and emotional support. However, the government should also offer financial help and suitable care services to families that need additional assistance. This shared approach can ensure that elderly people receive personal care without placing excessive pressure on families or public services.
