Sometimes it is believed that it might be possible to avoid congestion on the roads by expanding them. Although this idea is valid and used in many major cities, there need to be other improvements to prevent traffic jams.
Road expansion can create more space and ease traffic flow. The more space is created, the more cars can fit in one road. Many megalopopolises in such big countries as Russia, the USA and China have built their roads to enable a significant traffic flow. By doing so, they have reduced traffic congestion that could not be avoided considering how fast their major cities grow. Despite this development, these cities still experience traffic congestion, so more should be done to avoid it.
Not all cities have enough space to widen the roads due to intensive city-building. For example, cities in China are so overcrowded that its urban planning is very complicated. While standing on the first floor of a building, one can see that they are facing the 10th floor of another building. That is why the government has decided to build roads under- and overground roads to reduce car flow on main roads. This system helps its metropolises function properly.
To conclude, road expansion could be an effective way to reduce traffic jams. However, not every city may have the space needed for such an improvement so creating more roads above and under the gound could improve the situation with the traffic flow.
