Band 8+: Some people believe that schools should focus on academic studies, while others think they should teach life skills to children. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

There is an ongoing debate about the focus of schools in education. Some people believe that schools should primarily contribute to the academic knowledge of students, while others argue that children should also learn essential life skills. In my opinion, it is crucial for students to develop both types of capabilities.

First of all, we must consider the development of the digital era, which increasingly demands more academic knowledge. Those who emphasize the importance of a solid academic foundation may reference their child’s future, as they believe that children already gain life readiness through their daily responsibilities. Therefore, some argue that it is unnecessary to teach these life skills in school.

On the other hand, there are more complex tasks and challenges in life that cannot be learned solely through everyday experiences. Skills such as financial literacy and emotional regulation require dedicated learning and may take time to master. If teachers focus exclusively on academic excellence without addressing practical skills and emotional well-being, students may struggle with issues related to mental health or financial stability.

In my opinion, schools should equally teach children both cognitive and practical skills. Both types of skills are essential and in high demand in today’s society, particularly among women. For example, practical skills such as cooking can be taught alongside academic subjects, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world contexts.

In conclusion, rather than concentrating on just one area of expertise, schools should strive to teach both academic and life skills to prepare students for the everyday challenges they will face in their personal and professional lives.
