There are many bad influences can be happened to the country when the crime rate is increase. Some of citizens think that applying strict punishment to criminals is the best way to reduce the lawbreakers. From my perspective, I definitely think strict sentence is effective about deter the crime in many cases. But in my opinion, I don’t agree that punish crime strictly is the best method to reduce crime rate.
Firstly, harsh penalties do not address the root causes of crime. Hard punishments often focus on punishing behaviors of who don not obey the law without focusing on addressing the root causes of crime such as poverty, lack of education, mental instability or injustice social environment. Therefore, people still continuous commit the crime. Secondly, prison can relapse the fault when the prisoner’s sentence expires. Harsh punishment can create an unequal, violent, and uneducated prison environment. Besides, using serve punishment on lawbreaker is does not encourage the prisoner’s recovery and reintegration into society. Moreover, it’s can increase the prisoner’s sense of hopelessness and enmity. Leading to people reoffending after release from prison and have difficulties in become a good citizen in society.
In a nutshell, I think strict punishment is also an important method in reduce the crime. But it’s not the best way to increase the criminal if we use it single. In my opinion, authorities and constabulary should combine more solutions as support people about economic, education, the justice in society and psychological work with prisoners to reduce the crime in the most effective way.
