Nowadays, technology plays a vital role in the field of communication by helping people connect virtually and telephonically. However, some individuals perceive technology as a barrier to genuine communication. In this essay, we will discuss both arguments and present my own opinion.
On one hand, technology has provided numerous inventions that make our lives more convenient and interconnected. In the past, people would travel for months or even years to connect with their loved ones. Methods like using carrier pigeons or eagles were the only means of long-distance communication. However, now we can talk to anyone from anywhere in the world with just the click of a button. Governments can convey mass messages to the community easily. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, technology enabled the dissemination of vital information through television, radio, and other communication platforms, guiding a large number of people on how to stay safe from the infectious disease. Moreover, advanced communication systems like radars, GPS, and satellites have made it possible to connect the world wirelessly.
Conversely, some people argue that technology has created barriers to communication. In the past, individuals interacted more with one another. Children would go outside with friends, ride bikes, and engage in outdoor sports. Emotional attachments seemed stronger as everyone was more present in each other’s lives. Now, many people have become so addicted to technology that family members living in the same house hardly communicate. They spend more time on their gadgets than engaging in conversations.
In conclusion, technology has had a tremendous positive impact on communication by helping people connect globally and facilitating mass communication during crises or widespread diseases. While some argue that it has created a barrier, suggesting that people no longer feel the need to interact in real life and are becoming addicted to technology, I strongly believe that the advantages of technology outweigh the disadvantages.
