It is generally believed that the most effective way to prevent the crime is to extend the years of prison sentences. However, others argue that there are more effective ways to prevent crime. I think that improving schooling and educational programmes can reduce crime more than giving long prison sentences.
On the one hand,supporters of longer prison sentences argue that criminals’ longer sentences can prevent others from committing similar crimes. When criminals know that they may spend many years behind bars, they might think twice before committing a crime. For instance, in Singapore strict laws and long sentences for crimes such as drug trafficking and vandalism, believed to play a key role in keeping crime levels very low.
On the other hand, many people argue that there are more effective and sustainable ways to reduce crime such as improving educational programmes at schools. So that, when children will know the consequences of committing the crime and will get more skills with that they will get more job opportunities, that also helps to reduce crime. For example, in Norway the education system includes programmes like personal development and social responsibility.
In conclusion, while many people believe that longer prison sentences can effectively deter serious offenders, others argue that educating young people and providing them with practical skills is a more sustainable method of reducing crime. In my opinion, although strict punishment may prevent some individuals from breaking the law, long-term crime reduction is far more likely when people are provided with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities that encourage them to follow a lawful path.
