In the developing world, the debate over whether tourism has several merits for a country’s economy and society is widely discussed, with arguments both in favor of and against this notion. Although I can sympathise with both sides of the discussion, I fundamentally believe that contributions of tourism is undeniable, and it outweights its drawbacks.
On the one hand, tourism boosts economic growth by generating revenue for local businesses and also increasing job opportunities. The reason is that, as foreigners come to the country, foreign exchange curculation expands. As a results, various economic sectors of the countries such as hospitability, transport, and retail seize opportunity for yielding profit. Meeting the rising demand for the their services, managers of the these companies increase aviable job positions, that reduces financial burden on the government. For example, tourism is the main source of income for the population of Turkey, especially those living in the cities on the shores of the Mediterran Sea.
On the other hand, economic dependence of the country on the tourism may cause negative consequences. If the country rely too heavily on it, then will fall into economic crisis, especially during external shocks, such as pandemy, politic crises and wars. For the reason is that, government prioritizes tourism over other sectors, and therefore does not pay attention to develop them. For instance, many tourism-oriented countries suffered from financial downturn during COVID-19.
In conclusion, I am strongly in favor of tourism’s positive aspects because it offers valuable opportunities for both authorities and local citizens. What I suggest is that, while keeping this sector in mind, government should organize stress tests and various possible scenarios to insure economy.
