Opinions are divided on whether community service should become obligatory programs in high school or not. While this proposal could have certain negative impacts, I believe its associated advantages far outweigh them.
Admittedly, making community service a compulsory activity at school can be bad in some ways related to students’ academic performance and organization finances. In terms of individual learning, some students are often under pressure of the lessons and examinations at school, leading them to spend a huge amount of time learning and improving scores. As a result, forcing such individuals to take part in community service may increase the stress as they have less spare time to refresh themselves. Moreover, requiring community service as a compulsory program may create a financial burden to schools and organizations. Since it is an obligatory part of a learning program, it is necessary for schools to find the workforce, such as teachers, assistants to support students. Consequently, the cost to hire the staff in such activities is considerable.
However, having community service as a mandatory high school scheme offers far more advantages on individual and societal levels. One of them is that forcing students to take part in these activities broaden their career opportunities. When students have a list of good social activities in their curriculum vitae, they can give a good impression to the recruiters, so the possibility of getting a job is higher. Not only that, students who join in compulsory activities such as volunteering, helping the neighbors can form a bond with the society. They have the opportunity to give the hand to people with poor background, leading them to create a sense of sympathy and create a unity with the community they live in. As a result, the society will develop more strongly and powerfully with such meaningful activities thanks to the help of the young generation.
In conclusion, while I acknowledge there are certain drawbacks to compulsory unpaid community service at high school, it could ultimately bring great benefits related to personal achievements and social harmony. Based on the presented argument, I contend that such a proposal should be implemented
