Some individuals are of the opinion that the elderly should be entitled to subsidization and free healthcare services after their retirement. However, others contend that they should prepare financial resources themselves to satisfy their own demands for the rest of their life. While both schools of thought hold merit, I agree more with the former.
There are some reasons that explain why many people assert that senior citizens should make financial preparations for their own demands. Nowadays, in many nations, it is common to observe that the number of aging populations has been increasing over the past few years. Therefore, granting the elderly subsidies and accessibility to free healthcare can put a strain on the national budget, which means that the government may sacrifice a tremendous amount of its investment in numerous fields for the survival of the old. In addition, it is each individual’s responsibility to be financially independent and reserve a sum of money to fulfill their own needs after their retirement.
Nevertheless, others claim that a certain amount of financial resources and access to medical care services without payment should be offered to the elderly. This can be explained by the fact that this group is unable to make earnings to pay for essential services such as medical treatment, while medical costs are gradually escalating due to expenses for up-to-date equipment and the increased number of doctors and professionals needed. Hence, without financial support from the government, it can be much more difficult for them to have their health issues addressed and afford other indispensable needs in their lives. For instance, in Sweden, retirees are provided with a sufficient pension scheme and an advanced healthcare system. This approach is aimed at ensuring the quality of life for each citizen and extended life expectancy.
In conclusion, I am of the opinion that both views have their own merits. On balance, however, I maintain that the government should be held accountable for affording the elderly monetary assistance and free healthcare due to old individuals’ inability to make a living. Where possible, the old should set aside a certain amount of money to pay for their own needs after retiring.
