There is a debate about the role of universities. Some people believe that universities should prepare for the world of work, whereas others say they should focus on general education and expanding student’s knowledge and worldview. In my opinion, they should mainly focus on to prepare students for the work, but they shouln’t complately forgot general education
On the one hand, many people believe that universities should mainly focus on preparing students for their future carrers. This is because many students get into universities to get work, not diploma. In today’s world, many employers search for employee with practical knowledge, not only diploma. True, it doesn’t work for every field especially if you want to work in govornment work, but if you want to work in modern jobs, programming for example, diploma is not enough because almost none of IT companies require university degree.
On the other hand, some people argie that universities should teach general education to encourage critical thinking and expanding worldview. They believe that students should learn other fields or adapt their fields if their job changes or ai takeovers their job. For example, nowadays programmers write code from zero, ai writes almose 70 percent of code. On the top of that, landing page development is ended because nowadays it doesn’t need a code, ai can do it alone if your landing page site is simple. So, universities shouldn’t prepare for only their field, they have to teach general eduacation too.
In conclution, universiteis should provide both preparing for their work and teaching general knowledge because our technology is developing year by year and they are impacting our job. In my view, universites should mainly focus on student’s main field and they also need to teach general education, but they shouldn’t teach too much general education because it can be stressful and student may not like this
