Band 7+: some people claim that school should aim more on practical skills, rather than academic skills

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, some people claim that schools should focus more on practical skills rather than academic skills. This essay will discuss both types of skills and explain why, in my opinion, a blended approach that combines both methods is the most effective.

On one hand, practical skills in schools are very important. The first reason for this is that when students can’t experience something in real life, it doesn’t give them a full understanding of how it works. Additionally, many students find practical learning more engaging than traditional academic studies. Those who may not excel in conventional learning often demonstrate impressive abilities in practical applications, proving that practical skills are indeed essential in education. As a result, many students who show little interest in academic studies exhibit remarkable competence in work-related skills.

On the other hand, the importance of academic skills should not be overlooked. There are several reasons for this. First, theory provides the laws and principles that explain how and when things work, which schools need to teach. Secondly, without foundational academic knowledge, students may struggle to function effectively in their roles since a lack of understanding of the underlying principles can render skills meaningless. Consequently, academic skills are also vital in schools.

In conclusion, both sets of skills are crucial, and it is evident that without one, students cannot fully succeed. I strongly believe that schools will increasingly incorporate more practical skills in the future, as many educational institutions currently lack sufficient emphasis on this area. This approach is an effective way to gain knowledge in today’s world.

Foreign language learning should begin in primary school rather than in secondary school. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is often argued that foreign-language education should begin during primary school rather than being postponed until secondary education. I strongly agree with this view because younger children tend to acquire languages more naturally, and early exposure can also make them more confident communicators in the long term. One major reason for introducing a foreign […]
