Band 8+: Some people feel that the legal age at which people can marry should be at least 21. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The notion of marriage during one’s teenage years is a vivid aspiration for many young individuals; however, government regulations imposing a minimum legal marriage age are often viewed as restrictive. This essay will articulate the viewpoint that a legal marriage age of at least 21 is beneficial for individuals and society as a whole.

Firstly, the legal stipulation that individuals must be at least 21 years old to marry is advantageous, as psychological research indicates that individuals develop the emotional and cognitive maturity necessary for sustaining a family life after this age. Studies suggest that couples who enter into matrimony post-21 tend to experience greater stability and satisfaction in their relationships than those who marry during their teenage years. For instance, data from relationship surveys demonstrates that older couples report higher levels of commitment and conflict resolution skills, which are essential for a successful marriage.

Secondly, numerous experts assert that teenage marriages pose significant challenges due to the underdeveloped maturity of young individuals. Adolescents may lack the necessary life skills and responsibilities required to navigate the complexities of married life. For example, teenage parents often struggle to provide appropriate care and guidance for their children, frequently resulting in negative developmental outcomes due to their insufficient experience in managing both family obligations and personal growth. In contrast, individuals who marry later, after acquiring more life experience, usually demonstrate superior parenting abilities by effectively balancing work and family responsibilities.

Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that there are instances where young couples experience successful marriages, and some teenagers thrive in love and family life. These exceptions, however, do not overshadow the broader trend that supports delayed marriages as a strategy for improved societal wellbeing.

In conclusion, while the desire for early marriage is common among teenagers, it is prudent to establish a legal age of at least 21 for such commitments. This approach provides individuals the necessary time to cultivate emotional maturity and gain essential life skills, thereby equipping them to handle the challenges that marriage inevitably entails.
