In recent years, video games have become an integral part of many societies. Although some people believe it as a harmless entertainment and a useful way of learning effectively, many people argue that these games have detrimental effects on individuals. In my opinion, video games have more benefits that can easily undermine negative sides of them.
Regarding the disadvantages, spending excessive time on screen impacts negatively on eyesight because electronic devices, particularly mobile phones and laptops, release a considerable amount of harmful screen light which causes eye strain. For example, many cybersport players who spent most of their time in front of computer often complain from pain in their eyes. Furthermore, popularity of video games among youngsters distracts them from studying, keeping their focus away from academic achievements. Especially, students who study exact subjects, such as mathematics and physics, have a limited time from university courses. Besides that, video games waste a significant time as well as reducing the enthusiasm for the studies.
Nevertheless, digital games have notable benefits that need to be considered. First of all, these games can be beneficial for individuals’ cognitive skills because many games are strategy based so that they force human brain to figure out complex problems. Consequently, people start to find more logical solutions in real-life situations, using their brain as much as they can. Moreover, this kind of entertainment can inspire people to learn. This can be illustrated by the fact that people who play historical games have more tendency and passion to learn about ancient times. That means, computer game companies could engage many to learn history by creating that type of games. This also works for criminal and detective games encouraging children to become professional detective.
In conclusion, while playing video games have some drawbacks, I strongly believe that disadvantages can be outweighed by positive merits.
