This essay covers the topic of whether it is enough to increase the number of sports facilities to improve public health. While there are people that support or critisize both points of view, it seems to me that the growth of the sports facilities number by itself is not enough to significantly improve public health.
On the one hand, developing sports facilities tends to have positive effect on public health by preventing severe medical conditions like heart diseases and overweight. Furthermore, engagement into sports helps to stay in shape and to avoid bad habits, such as drinking alcohol and smoking. On the other hand, nowadays the pace of live has increased dramatically, leaving almost no time for any leisure or sport activities. Moreover, it may be too expensive for the most vulnerable groups of people. As a result, practicing sports is only a preventive measure, which does not significantly improve public health.
While construction of new sports facilities and promotion of an active lifestyle seems a good initial step, it is absolutely necessary that it is complemented by other measures to improve public health. First of all, medical insurance should be accessible to all groups of the population, alongside with a highly developed hospital network. This measure may help to deal with existing health issues and emergency situations. Second, to treat patients trained medical staff is required. To promote skilled medical personnel the government should invest into training facilities, such as medical colleges, institutes and universities. Third, there should be a full-scale advertising campaign by the government to alert people about the risks of smoking, alcohol and other harmful substances.
In conclusion, building sports facilities certainly contributes to public health improvement, but it alone is not enough to tackle the problem without additional measures. I strongly believe that practicing sports, alongside with a healthy lifestyle, a developed medical facilities network, skilled medical staff and governmental information campaigns are the factors required in this case.
