There is a common statement that learning history has a crucial significance in the humans’ life, while others do not agree with this point of view. In this essay, I am going to discuss about this issue and explain my personal opinion.
On the one hand, in the modern world, when computer technologies are developing at a rapid pace, history might be not so relevant. There are more important problems, which need to be solved, for instance, climate change, the implementation of alternative energy sources, and diseases are currently considered incurable. In this context, history seems useless. Moreover, in any cases history can lead to outdated approaches to solving problems and an obstacle to innovation. For example, the political structures or cultural practices that existed hundreds of years ago might not have any direct bearing on today’s world, where new challenges demand more immediate solutions.
On the other hand, studying history makes sense in politics and international relations if it is about resolving some conflict, because it is very important to know historical background between two opposing sides. Therefore, understanding the causes of past conflicts, can guide diplomatic strategies in preventing future violence. Besides, by analyzing previous events, we can recognize recurring trends, which can help us predict potential outcomes in similar situations today.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that studying history is vital for every person. Knowledge, gained from historical context, help us to understand contemporary problems better and find the most effective solutions, because the future does not exist without the past.
