The debate over whether history has nothing to tell us or whether history can enhance our understandting of reality, remains controversial. Both sides have strong arguments supporting their positions. In the following the discussion, I will explore this complex issue and present my own view.
First of all, history is a traditional subject that many students should study at school. Many of students find it quite boring because events happened many years ago, which sometimes have no connections with nowadays. Moreover, understanding of the essence of the past can not make today’s world much better as it could raise the social tensions associated with the past. There are numerous examples of it, such as war in Ukraine, conflicts in Middle East etc. All of these events have their roots in the past, which destroying lives of million people who even do not know the reasons of these conflicts.
On the other hand, styding of history has positive outcomes that could help to diminish negative outcomes of the past events. As we know the history events could repeat as humanity does not changed. In this regard, society can recognize the potentiall danger in early stages. The great example is Germany where all students know about Hitler and the consequences of his actions for world. This approach has the main idea to prevent future generations from similar mistakes that german society made in 1930s, which leads to better understanding of the motives and realzing why it should not be repeated again.
In conclusion, I do believe that history is essential part of our lives because it helps young generations understand past mistakes of their ancestors and mitigate the potentially similar mistakes in the future.
