Many think that studying literature is unnecessary for high school pupils, especially novels and poems. While this is true to some extent, I completely disagree with this statement for several reasons.
To begin with, the final years in school would have a lifelong effect on students’ lives. Regarding this, many people argue that studying literature in schools should not be compulsory, instead other stem subjects should be taught in broader way, in order to make them ready for further educational centers. Addition some of them believes that if directors of schools should implement sport subjects, replacing humanities in high school. So that, high school students cannot only achieve mental well being, but also physical well-being. For instance, in some American school allow their pupils to choose their subjects individually, as well as their timeline also, to make the lesson flexible for their students.
However, I am of the opinion that literature is one of the indispensible parts of the high school curriculum. Since, it cannot only provide students with opportunities to foster their imagination and creativity, but also enable them to strengthen their cognitive function. While reading books can help them to broader their horizon, learning poems can strengthens their cognitive function. Involving this, their ability in mastering new languages or subjects can be stronger. Take my home country, as an example, Uzbekistan, where social studies are mandatory for all students to study.
In conclusion, although literature will seem to waste high school students’ time, in my point of view, it can help them to learn STEM subjects or foreign languages fast and effectively.
