In the contemporary world, many individuals are convinced that parents have to make the choice of university major for their kids themselves, while others believe the future student has to independently choose his own desired field. From my perspective, there are both advantages and drawbacks in each situation. However, allowing the child to make a choice is crucial.
In the first situation, when parents are the ones who make a choice of their children’s university degree, there are a lot of benefits. Firstly, elderly people have a wide range of wisdom they can share. This is due to the fact that they have lived on this earth longer than youngsters and have gone through a lot of life struggles. Teenagers that graduated recently have almost no experience of different university fields. That way, they can easily make a wrong choice which will directly make an impact on their future career. For example, in any institution we can find people who are upset with their degree, and regret they did not choose it carefully. Therefore, letting parents make this important choice may save a child’s career, because they have more experience and practice.
In contrast, when a kid is allowed to make a decision about his specialization, he follows his dreams and desires. When a person has passion for something, chances to succeed rise significantly. For instance, many successful alumni had decided on their degree on their own, in the past. Furthermore, last year I observed several cases when students were unsatisfied with their majors since they were not given the right to choose it themselves. Thus, sometimes it is better to let the high school pupil make a decision about their future himself.
To sum up, whereas many humans believe that the field of study at university has to be chosen by parents, others argue it should be made by a student. From my point of view, both ways are advantageous, having minor declines that have to be accounted for.
