Band 6+: Some people think schools should group pupils according to their academic ability, but others believe pupils with different abilities should be educated together. Discuss both views and give your opinion?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, educational equity and sustainable development remain a prominent public concern. Some believe that students should be selected by their academic ability, while others subscribe to the notion that diverse students ought to study in the same class. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my viewpoint that students should be categorized according to their academic ability, interests and personality.

Opponents of separated classes argue that selecting students may deteriorate education equity as it labels individuals by various abilities, For example, discrimination may occur against lower-performance or less talented students. So these initiatives may hinder children’s sustainable development and should be abandoned. However, focusing solely on the gloomy aspects would bias our judgment critics often overlook the fact that each student is unique. Given that the gaps between students are unavoidable, when studying together, pupils with limited abilities may be frustrated by their more advanced counterparts. Simultaneously, talented children may get bored with repeating simple skills and basic knowledge when studying with ordinary classmates.

Consequently, it is essential to select students at their appropriate age and education stage to minimize oppose impacts of labeling. Only after having thoroughly understood students’ abilities limits, interests and personalities, as well as open, and seamless communication with students and their parents, should teachers make decisions to group students. Moreover, ongoing and instant feedback should be given to parents to ensure the overall outcome and well-being of the selected students. Students with similar abilities and interests studying together would foster friendly competition, supportive atmosphere and collective goals when they are provided with tailored curriculum and examinations.

In conclusion, it is more a blessing than a curse if students are selected by their abilities and interests with comprehensive evaluation at appropriate age to enhance their well-being and overall academic achievement.
