Nowadays there is a hot debate over whether students should be allowed to opt for their own subjects or they should study a standard range of subjects. In my opinion, curriculum in shcools should be designed in a way that allows students to decide on which subjects they want to study.
Some individuals argue that pupils should study a defined set of essential subjects at scholl and they support this idea with some arguments. Firstly, they claim that student must be knowledgeable about all core subjects such as math, science etc., because having these knowledge prepare them achieve succes in their future professional life. For instance, if someone has degree related in math, and at the same time has literature knowledge they pursue career in literature related workplaces. Furthermore, opponents argue that subsequently, students may change their opinions about which subject they want to learn and this can lead to a waste of time and low academic achievement.
On the other hand I share the opinion of those who contend that students should be allowed to select their own subjects. First and foremost, a great deal of research shows that many talented pupils waste their potential due to focusing on fixed set of core subjects. For instance, if student gifted in art or photography and has a chance to choose optional subjects, society will have gained a talented artist rather than someone who choose teaching as a career out of necessity. Moreover, opting for their own subjects can encourage them to making decisions independently from very young age.
In summary, despite the arguments put forward by critics of selecting own subjects, I would side with those who believe students should have rights to choose elective subjects.
