Band 9: Some people think technology development decreases crime, while others believe it encourages crime. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Technological advancement has transformed every aspect of modern life, including the way crimes are committed and prevented. While some people argue that technology helps to reduce crime, others believe it has led to an increase in criminal activities. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own view.

On the one hand, many believe that technology development has helped to decrease crime rates through advanced surveillance and security systems. For example, the widespread use of CCTV cameras, facial recognition software, and GPS tracking enables law enforcement agencies to monitor public spaces and identify criminals more effectively. Additionally, digital databases and forensic technologies allow for faster investigations and higher conviction rates. Moreover, online banking and electronic payments reduce the need to carry cash, which lowers the risk of street crimes such as robbery or pickpocketing. From this viewpoint, technology acts as a deterrent by increasing the chances of criminals being caught.

On the other hand, others argue that technology has encouraged new forms of crime, especially in the digital world. Cybercrime has become one of the fastest-growing threats, with hackers stealing personal information, committing online fraud, and spreading viruses. The rise of the dark web also enables illegal activities such as drug trafficking and identity theft to occur anonymously. Furthermore, technological tools like encrypted communication and fake identification make it harder for authorities to trace criminals. As a result, technology, while offering convenience, also opens doors for individuals to misuse it for unlawful purposes.

In my opinion, technology itself is neutral – it can both prevent and promote crime depending on how it is used. Governments and individuals must focus on developing cybersecurity systems, promoting digital literacy, and enforcing strict cyber laws to ensure technology serves as a tool for safety rather than exploitation.

In conclusion, while technology has helped reduce traditional forms of crime through improved surveillance and security, it has also given rise to new types of digital crimes. Therefore, the key lies in using technology responsibly and implementing effective safeguards to minimize its negative impacts.
