The opinion was divided on whether an income or a social life can be provided by employment, or whether developing a social life with people you do not work with is better. While I acknowledge the arguments of the former, I partly agree with the latter.
Proponents of the former view may have several arguments. Chief among these is that people spend almost all their time with colleagues. In fact, work time makes up much of the time of a person’s life. Therefore, they can clearly understand their colleagues’ personalities, that make a perfect condition to construct a long-lasting relationship. For example, many married couples were colleagues even in the same departments. Another possible reason is that when they have a good relationship with the people who work with them, they may receive numerous helps from colleagues, thereby boosting efficiency. This support can help them achieve many work-related aims in their career.
Another view, nevertheless, can have many problems. The main detrimental effect is that people may have conflicts easily that discourage the development of work-related relationships. For instance, there are numerous circumstances in which a group of people has good relationships when they were in school, but when they have to deal with a shared task at the workplace, they have several problems that cause conflicts and then affect their relationship in daily life. The second reason is that workplaces have to be professional environments. In fact, if they add other factors, such as emotions or even biases, they might have poor performance because of the lack of structure in work. For example, many issues preventing the structure of any department result from the attitude of staff having strong bonds with their bosses. This situation can also create a toxic work environment that discourages the contribution of employees.
In conclusion, I firmly acknowledge that some people argue that a job provides not only an income but also a social life. However, I prefer the view that it is better to develop a social life with people you do not work with due to several reasons.
