Band 7+: Some people think that computer games are bad for children, while others believe that they are beneficial. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is a common belief that computer games have both positive and negative aspects: there are supporters of the thesis that these software extensions can be implied in various practical ways, and there are opponents to that statement who actually believe that electronic games can do more harm than good. Even though both sides have their own strengths, I believe that computer games can be very harmful for kids.

There are two main advantages that video games have. First, they can be a method for children to learn new skills and gain knowledge that is usually not available in the classroom. For example, a few year ago, I used to play a game that required a bit more advanced math skills then I was familiar with from school. I had to step out of my comfort zone and learn topics like logarithm, square root, and others. The second advantage is that they can be a great tool for kids who live in a stressful domestic or school environment to escape it and feel safer. There have been many instances when children try to escape the harmful outside world by engaging in computer games.

That being said, this can lead to an addiction. By suppressing their negative emotions through video games, young people can easily start relying solely on these softwares to bring them joy and comfort. This addiction becomes quite evident when children stop going outside, playing with friends, communicating with their family, etc. Consequently, the lack of social interactions may result in social isolation, anxiety and loneliness. I used to have a friend who at some point lost all of his friends, just because he was so addicted to video games and couldn’t force himself to go outside and spend his time with his mates.

This brings me to my point of view that entertainment software extensions are usually not beneficial for the development of young people, including children and teens. It is their negative results on mental and social health that have led me to this belief.
