It is believed that building wider roads are capable on reducing traffic issues. Although theoretically this seems possible, I believe that this causes drawbacks and bring new issues. However, widening roads will help especially in cities with small roads.
It is obvious that a larger roads mean being able to accommodate more cars. Building a bigger roads in cities with small roads can also help with faster access to certain places. It is clear that the ability to accommodate more cars will leads to a significant drop in traffic problems. However, this backfires with itself, as building bigger roads causes a higher usage of private vehicle, leading to more traffic.
Besides that, some countries are too small to support a more massive roads. On busy cities, the idea of blocking a road in order to increase it’s size sounds almost impossible. To add to that, adding a road’s width will costs a massive amount of expenditure for the country.
To reduce traffic, there are other alternatives such as improving and increasing the quality of public transport. This can also be done by creating more train to accommodate more people inside.
In conclusion, building bigger roads will not help in reducing traffic issues but instead causes drawbacks to itself. However, I do agree about the importance of building wider roads especially in places where the roads are too narrow.
