Band 7+: Some people think that developed countries should help developing countries with financial aid. Other believe that developing countries should help themselves. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s interconnected world, the question of whether wealthy nations should support poorer countries is a topic of frequent debate. Some argue that developed countries have a responsibility to assist developing nations financially, whole others believe that long-term progress depends on self-reliance. This essay will explore both perspective before presenting a reasoned opinion.

On one hand, supporters of international aid argue that developed countries have both means and the moral duty to help those in need. Financial assistance can significantly improve living standards in developing countries by funding infrastructure, education, and healthcare. For instance, aid from the Unites States and European union has funded vaccination programs in sub-Saharan Africa, significantly lowering rates of preventable diseases like measles and malaria. Additionally, in times of natural disaster – such as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti – international assistance provided food, medical care, and temporary shelter, saving thousand of lives. Beyond immediate relief, such support can alco strengthen long-term development and global stability.

On the other hand, critics contend that constant reliance on foreign aid hinder a country’s development. In some cases, foreign aid is poorly managed or lost to corruption, leading to minimal real impact. For example, despite receiving billions in aid, some countries like South Sudan continue to struggle with corruption and conflict, which prevent money from reaching the people who need it most. Furthermore, when governments become dependent on outside support, they may lack motivation to invest in local industries or reform public institutions. Rwanda, in contrast, is often cited as success story: after the 1994 genocide, it gradually reduced its dependence on aid by investing in education, agriculture, and good governance, leading to significant economic growth and stability.

In my view, the most effective approach is a balanced one. Developed countries should continue offering financial and technical support, but it must be strategic and tied to accountability. At the same time, developing nations must take ownership of their progress by improving transparency and building sustainable systems. Partnerships, rather that one-side donations, are the key to lasting change.

In conclusion, while both sides of the argument raise valis concerns, a collaborative model – where aid is combined with strong internal efforts – offers the most promising path toward meaningful and sustainable development.
