Band 9: Some people think that economic growth is the best way to end world poverty, while others argue that economic growth is damaging the environment and should be stopped. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Economic growth has long been considered a key driver of poverty reduction, yet some argue that its environmental consequences outweigh its benefits. While economic development can indeed lift millions out of poverty, it can also contribute to environmental degradation. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting the view that economic growth should continue, but in a sustainable manner.

On the one hand, economic growth is widely regarded as the most effective way to alleviate poverty. As a country’s economy expands, it creates jobs, improves infrastructure, and increases government revenue, allowing for greater investment in education, healthcare, and social welfare. For example, China’s rapid economic development over the past few decades has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty, improving living standards significantly. Moreover, economic progress encourages innovation, leading to advancements in technology that can further enhance productivity and overall well-being.

On the other hand, critics argue that economic growth often comes at the cost of environmental destruction. Industrial expansion leads to deforestation, air and water pollution, and increased carbon emissions, contributing to global warming. For instance, countries experiencing rapid industrialization, such as India and Brazil, have witnessed severe environmental degradation, threatening biodiversity and public health. Furthermore, some argue that unlimited economic growth is unsustainable, as it depletes natural resources and endangers future generations.

In my opinion, economic growth should not be halted, but it must be managed in an environmentally responsible way. Governments and businesses should prioritize sustainable development by investing in renewable energy, enforcing strict environmental regulations, and promoting green technologies. Countries like Sweden and Germany, for example, have successfully maintained strong economies while implementing eco-friendly policies, demonstrating that economic progress and environmental protection can coexist.

In conclusion, while economic growth plays a crucial role in reducing poverty, its environmental impact cannot be ignored. However, rather than stopping economic development altogether, a balanced approach that incorporates sustainability is the best way forward. By adopting environmentally responsible policies, societies can enjoy both economic prosperity and a healthy planet.
