There exists a debate on whether a country should host an internation sport event or not. Some people finds it a good opportunity for the host country, whereas the other argues that it is just a waste of money.
To begin with, a country hosts an international sport event certaintly benefits a lot from it. It is obvious that the tourists from paticipating countries will visit the host country, apart from the athelets, helping to boost revenues of services like hotel, restaurant, transport, etc. Also, infrastructures must be improved for the success of the sport event, and remains benefit and convenience for local residence after the event. Similar success stories counts those such as the 2012 London Olympics, World Cup 1994 in the United States of America, etc.
Another point is that, in case of unsuccessful organizing of the event, such hosting might bring a negative effect of the country’s economy. The prepare for such an event, huge amount of money must be spent years ahead of it to build new stadiums, to upgrade public transport system, and to enhance public security. A typical example is in Brazil, where billions of US dollars spent in preparation of the 2016 Olympics and FIFA World Cup 2014. However, due to poor planning and management, many stadiums have been abandoned and remained heavy burden to the financial situation of the country.
As a result, the hosting of an international sport event has two folds. It can either help boosting the host country’s economy or it can place a severe impact if not properly planned and managed.
