Some people think that it is a waste of money for countries to host big sporting events like the world cup, and that the money would be better spent on other things. However, others think that hosting large sporting events has a clear, positive impact on a country.
Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
Hosting major international events such as the World Cup and Olympics can be both an exciting celebration of sports and a costly burden on a state budget. In this sense, people have different views about their effects on a host country. Although some oppose them due to their temporary benefits and the presence of other fields in need of money, I believe that this decision can contribute to the development of various spheres in a country.
On the one hand, the reason why some people may be allergic to the initiatives of having such global events is associated with a limited lucrative nature that they have. Although the sporting hospitality and transport facilities specially constructed for the event visitors initially act as an intensive source of income, after the events end, not only does the stream of funds cease to exist, but also these places will generate excessive maintenance costs on the shoulders of taxpayers. Little did the organisers of the Sochi 2014 Olympics know, for example, that all the investments channelled to host this event would not be economically viable, as the majority of infrastructure erected for that remain abandoned, requiring constant money supply. If those budget resources were invested in either education or medicine, they would crystallise in the form of developed human capital in the long run.
On the other hand, no matter how financially irrational it can be to host these sorts of events, we should take into account the immaterial values they carry, capable of reinforcing the global profile of the host and diplomatic relations between nations. The more such events are hosted, the more opportunities a host country would have at disposal to both showcase its culture to the whole world and improve its liaisons with other states. To welcome a chance to organise big sporting festivals is hence to eliminate cultural as well as political borders among world countries.
In conclusion, I can understand why people might want to encourage their states to give priority to other domains instead of hosting allegedly wasteful sporting events, but it seems to me that holding them is much more desirable.
